Swatching Workshop!
by Deborah Newton
December 18, 2011 1:00p-2:30p

Join Deborah as she presents one of her favorite topics. She will bring examples of many swatches from her collection and talk about them, as well as talk about the value of swatching. Students will work on their own swatches with guidance from Deborah.

All of this will be interesting and informative for knitters as well as those who design, or those who want to learn to design.

"Learning to enjoy swatching-- and see how valuable it is for success in knitting and designing-- is one of the pleasures of our craft", says Deborah.

Let Deborah share her enthusiasm with you on December 18th from 12p-3p. She will be available to sign your books and will have copies of her new book FINISHING SCHOOL (from the publishers of Vogue Knitting)  which was chosen by Amazon as one of their Top Ten Craft Books of 2011.

Please note below:

Those who sign up for the class will be required to bring a 6" by 6"-- worked in any yarn, any pattern stitch, or combination of stitches--  and some extra yarn and some needles of the size used for the swatch, as well as one size smaller.

Cost: $35

 Hope to see you there!

Double Knitting Returns to Newbury Yarns!!

Fallingblox Designs

A word from Alasdair Post-Quinn

So far, you might have made a double-knit washcloth or a motif swatch in a previous class. Perhaps you've done a scarf or one of many double-knit hat patterns. At this point you're pretty comfortable with double-knitting - but maybe you're wondering whether you've reached the limits of this technique. I assure you: you have not.

This workshop is a whirlwind tour of some of the most useful and interesting "extreme" double-knitting techniques that I have developed. In a single swatch, you'll learn 3-color double-knitting, double-knit cables, two-pattern double-knitting, decorative increases and decreases, and a little bit of openwork. You'll also learn a really clean double-knit edge and a really interesting decorative bind-off.

Requirements: 3 contrasting colors of plain wool, wool-blend or quality acrylic yarn in the DK to fingering-weight range and a pair of straight or circular needles in the proper size for the yarn. Previous double-knitting experience required -- you should either have taken Alasdair's Introduction to Double-Knitting workshop or have done some other double-knitting colorwork on your own or in another workshop. If you're not already familiar with my cast-on, please learn it before the workshop so we can move right into new techniques. You can find a video tutorial on Youtube athttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQpsC1FKGrU.

Double-Knitting Level 1: Introduction to Double-Knitting

(3 hours)

Objective: To learn double-knitting and reversible colorwork techniques.

Description: Double-knitting is a unique method of making a fabric with no "wrong" side and a built-in reversible colorwork pattern. Significantly different from the standard intarsia and Fair Isle colorwork that are so well known, double-knitting is a labor-intensive but wholly worthwhile technique to have in your repertoire. In this workshop, you'll learn my 2-color cast-on for double-knitting, get comfortable with the techniques involved, then move into colorwork. At the end of the workshop, you should have a motif swatch and be confident that you can tackle a larger standard double-knitting pattern.

Requirements: 2 contrasting colors of plain yarn in the DK to worsted weight range and a pair of straight or circular needles. This is an advanced technique, but you need only be comfortable with the long-tail cast-on and basic knit and purl; previous experience with colorwork is also helpful but not necessary.

Double-Knitting Level 2: New Adventures in Double-Knitting

(4 hours)

Objective: To take your existing knowledge of double-knitting technique and push its limits.
